Balancing Motherhood and Self-Care Postpartum

Your precious baby has arrived and the immediate sense of celebration will now be replaced with a new way of life which you must learn to navigate. The postpartum period –  a significant transition for a new mother and a crucial bonding period between mother and baby.

At Our Birthing Center, we understand the unique challenges of balancing caring for your newborn and nurturing your own well-being. To aid your physical and emotional recovery, we partner with excellent midwives for postpartum care in Manhattan, NYC, all the way to Essex County, NJ.

Here are some tips from our caring midwives for navigating the postpartum transition.

What Every New Mom Needs

Postpartum self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. A happy, healthy mom leads to a happy, healthy baby. Outside of caring for your baby’s needs, which will naturally be your sole priority, it’s important to:

  • Rest: You’ve heard it before but we’ll say it again – sleep when the baby sleeps, even if it's just for short bursts, so you have the energy to care for your baby. Sleep is also incredibly important for your body to heal and recover after months of being your precious arrival’s miracle incubator.

  • Nourish your body: Eat nutrient-rich foods and stay hydrated to replenish your body after childbirth, especially if you're breastfeeding. This will also help you manage your unpredictable sleep schedule a little easier.

  • Practice body basics: Listen to your body! Gentle exercise, massages, and simple post-shower routines can boost your mood and help you feel refreshed.

In this period, you might find connecting with other new mothers helpful, joining an online support group, or seeking professional guidance. Sharing your experiences and feelings with other women who can relate can be incredibly empowering.

It’s also important to be realistic about what you can accomplish and ask for help from your partner, family, or friends so you can focus on healing and bonding with your baby.

How a Midwife Can Help Postpartum

A midwife is someone who has expertise and experience in caring for newborns and new moms. They provide comfort, care, and medical checks in the immediate period after your delivery to ensure that both you and your baby are healthy and coping with your new norm.

Midwives can empathetically and expertly answer your questions about breastfeeding, diaper changes, diet, or any other concerns you might have about your baby’s needs without judgment.
